Death Register #2
1897-1903

This file is a transcription of Jones County Death Register #1, which begins 1 Sep 1880 and ends 11 Nov 1897. FHL film #1255499 was used in the transcription. All columns in the original record are included with the exception of that indicating color. In a very few instances where a person was of a color other than white, I have so indicated.

Names (presumably the mother's) from the index where a stillbirth occurs are included; however, it is noted that these records are listed separately, and they were not included in the LDS microfilm, so I was unable to give further information.

In many cases the writing was challenging to decipher. I would encourage any researcher to try alternate spellings. I apologise in advance for any transcription errors and welcome any corrections.

Finally, the diagnosis of "abortion" occurs with some frequency. This should not be misconstrued. In medical terminology it simply means a loss of pregnancy up to the fourth month of gestation, or what a lay person would call "miscarriage." In the 1880s-90s an abortion deliberately caused would have been termed "criminal abortion."

-Mary Kay Kuhfittig

Jones County Death Records Indexes Online

The State Historical Society of Iowa has uploaded a new State Archives death records database. Jones county death records July 1918-1933 that are not available on County Records microfilm can now be accessed in PDF format.

Each death record contains the deceased¹s name, birth date, birth place, death date, mother¹s maiden name, death certificate number, and the archive box number.

Researchers have several options for obtaining copies of the actual death certificates. Pay the basic reference fee and contact the Historical Library and Archives Reading Room to order a photocopy of the certificate, or visit the reading room personally and pay only for the photocopy.

Visit the SHSI website and check out the excellent resources available through SHSI! Questions? Want to volunteer to help with this or another indexing project? Contact: Librarian Susan Jellinger, (515) 281-6897.
