In addition to the federal census, state of Iowa census records are available for Jones county for the years 1852, 1854, 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925.
The state censuses taken in 1852 & 1854 list the heads of households and number of males and females. In 1852 many times the wife is also named. From 1856 on, censuses are every-name censuses. 1856 includes the number of years people have lived in Iowa. |
The 1925 Iowa state census is particularly useful as it gives the father's name and birthplace, and mother's maiden name and birthplace for each person listed, in addition to information about education and home ownership. You can find the Iowa censuses on microfilm at some larger libraries or through your local Latter Day Saints Family History Center.
Census records are very difficult to transcribe—beginning with the penman- |
ship of the enumerator, through the marks, smudges, mildew and fading of time, to the limitations of the copying process, everything seems to conspire against the transcriber's efforts to create an accurate reproduction of these documents. Readers are encouraged to contribute additions and corrections to the information. The transcribers' errors will be fixed and the enumerators' errors will be noted. |
